This week, FiCCC had the privilege of participating as a sponsor in the Markus Pessa Summer School, directed by Professor Mircea Guina of Tampere University. Held in Tampere, this week-long event brought together a vibrant mix of 120 students, researchers, and industry professionals from around the world to explore the frontiers of optoelectronics and photonics.
What made this event particularly meaningful was its strong focus on young researchers and students. As we reflected during the week, engaging with the next generation of scientists and innovators is not just valuable — it’s essential. These are the minds that will shape the future of our industry, and their energy and curiosity were palpable throughout the sessions.
The Summer School offered a unique blend of deep scientific content and entrepreneurial spirit. Alongside technical lectures, participants were introduced to startup stories and company showcases, many of which originated from the Tampere University Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC). It was inspiring to see how former students had transitioned from academia to entrepreneurship, founding companies that now operate in Tampere and beyond.
This kind of ecosystem — where professors actively encourage entrepreneurial thinking and help students identify opportunities — is exactly what Europe needs to thrive in the semiconductor and photonics sectors. The EU Chips Act and local strategies like Chips from the North by Technology Industries Finland aim to grow our capabilities, but success depends on cultivating talent and fostering innovation at every level.
Finland is well-positioned in both photonics and quantum technologies. From laser development in Tampere to photonics in Eastern Finland and photodetectors in Southern Finland, and from VTT’s nanophotonic structures to IQM’s world-class quantum computing, we have a robust and diverse research and business landscape. The synergy between photonics and quantum is especially promising, offering solutions to challenges in computing, communications, and sensing.
Beyond the science, the Summer School also offered moments of connection and relaxation. Tampere being the Sauna Capital of the World, a true highlight was the authentic smoke sauna evening, which proved to be a hit among international guests. The gentle heat and unique atmosphere of the smoke sauna provided a perfect setting for informal networking and cultural exchange.
To summarize, the Markus Pessa Summer School 2025 was more than just an academic event — it was a launchpad for future collaborations, startups, and breakthroughs. FiCCC is proud to support such initiatives that not only advance technology but also strengthen the community behind it.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to Professor Mircea Guina and the organizing team for the opportunity to be part of this inspiring week. We look forward to continuing our support for the next generation of innovators.
